Pendant Light Height Guide: How Low to Hang Over Tables, Islands and More

Too low, and people bump their heads or shield their eyes. Too high, and you get glare in the sightline plus a room that feels oddly tall for no reason you can name. The rules, it turns out, are simpler than most guides make them.

The height numbers

Over a table you can go lower than over a walkway, because nobody stands up into it. If your household is tall, lean toward the high end of every range.

Start with the table, not the ceiling

Ceiling height changes how a pendant looks but not how it should function. The measurement that matters is from the surface to the bottom of the shade. In an 8-foot room, 30 inches above a tabletop looks dramatic. In a 12-foot room it looks almost low-slung — and that's fine. Resist the urge to raise it to fill the space; raise the cord, not the light.

The three repeat offenders

• Hanging for the photo, not the diner. Pendants at eye level of a standing adult over a dining table look great in listings and blind you from a chair.
• Doubling up without adjusting. Two small pendants over an island need the same 30–36 inch clearance as one big one — the height doesn't change, only the spread. Keep 24–30 inches between shades.
• Forgetting the view through the room. A pendant over an island in an open plan often sits in the sightline from the entry to the garden. Check it from the doorway before you drill.

Diameter math

For a single pendant over a table, the shade diameter should be about half the table's width. A 36-inch round table wants an 18-inch shade. Over an island, allow 24–30 inches between multiple pendants and keep the outermost shades 12 inches from the ends of the counter.

Mock it up before you cut the cord

Hang the fixture with the cord resting on the ceiling rose and no wiring, if the design allows, and live with the height for a day. Sit at the table. Stand at the island. If you catch yourself noticing the light — rather than the room it makes — it's at the wrong height. Adjust, then cut the cord. Cord length is the one thing you can't return.

Height is one lever of three: color temperature sets the mood of the light, and dimmer switches set its intensity.
